Stephen Antonakos (1927-2013)

Stephen Antonakos has passed away at the age of eighty-six, reports his New York dealer Lori Bookstein. Antonakos was born in Agios Nikolaos, a small village in Greece, and came to New York with his family at the age of four. The artist used neon to activate space through large-scale geometric sculptures. Antonakos’s work is included in collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, among a host of other international venues. His work appeared at Documenta 6 in 1977 and at the 1997 Venice Biennale. Said Bookstein: “An extraordinary artist and an exceptional friend, Antonakos will be profoundly missed by the many people whose lives he touched. We will never forget his rigorous mind, generosity of spirit, and warm smile.”
